If your guest list has outgrown your planned reception venue—and you can't possibly cross anyone off, then why not consider an outdoor wedding venue?

Outdoor garden receptions are also a good idea if you were already married and just want a celebratory party a few weeks after the actual wedding ceremony. It is also a popular celebration for couples remarrying who don't want a traditional wedding reception.

Outdoor garden wedding receptions don't mean you have to miss out on all the formalities of a seated wedding reception. Guests still expect wedding speeches, want to see the cake being cut, and always wish for a bridal waltz.

If you're planning an outdoor reception, here are some things to consider:

• Allow 3-5 hours for an outdoor reception. Anything shorter will seem too rushed, and anything longer may feel dragged out for your guests (who have been standing and drinking for a long time).
• If you have a longer reception, make sure you cater for it with have enough food, drinks and extra chairs.
• Speeches should be short, and make sure the speakers can be seen by all the guests.
• The food served should reflect the season. Ask your caterers for suggestions.
• Maybe have a dessert table filled with delicious or decorative desserts. As a feature you could include your wedding cake on the dessert table.
• You should have enough seating for one third of your guests. Groups of chairs with tables are best at outdoor receptions.
• Considered the weather? If the forecast (or season) is unpleasant hire a marquee.
• Try to have a stage or elevated platform where your MC and speech makers can be seen.
